Reflexology for Conception & Fertility
Infertility
Most experts define infertility as a couple being unable to conceive after at least one year of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse.
About 85% of couples will conceive naturally within one year if they have regular unprotected sex. Of 100 couples trying to conceive naturally:
20 will conceive within one month,
70 will conceive within six months,
85 will conceive within one year,
90 will conceive within eighteen months, and
95 will conceive within two years.
Primary infertility usually refers to patients with no history of a successful pregnancy. Secondary infertility indicates that there has been a previous successful pregnancy.
For many couples, the stress and anxiety associated with failing to conceive can be overwhelming. Often feeling isolated from friends and family who have experienced no problems with conception, and coming under further pressure from the media, who bombard us daily with statistics on rates of falling fertility and women leaving it “too late”, anxiety can mount onto an often already over-burdened couple.
It is important to try not to panic if you are experiencing difficulty conceiving - although one in seven couples do have difficulty conceiving, the number of couples who are actually infertile is relatively low. And in cases where the diagnosis is of ‘unexplained infertility’ 60-70% of this group will go on to conceive within 3 years without any treatment.
Whatever the symptoms, it is essential to consult your GP/Consultant so that all tests can be carried out for both partners, and a diagnosis made as regards the cause of infertility.
Why Reflexology for Conception?
Reflexology has a very calming and balancing effect on the body, enabling the body to release physical and emotional stress, and works on both a physical and energetic level. It can also help in re-balancing hormonal irregularities.
Stress can be a major factor in many instances of reduced fertility. Reflexology is renowned for promoting a deep state of relaxation, allowing the body to recover from persistent stressors that may be affecting the ability to conceive. Women trying unsuccessfully to become pregnant may have levels of stress, in terms of anxiety and depression, equivalent to women with serious diseases. When we are under stress we experience several neuro-chemical changes which can alter the ordered release of hormones that regulate the maturation and release of an egg.
Reflexology can help in promoting fertility by:-
Balancing the endocrine (hormone) system.
Reducing stress.
Treating the spine and corresponding spinal nerves which affect the whole reproductive area.
Cleansing, particularly the large intestine and the liver.
It is often helpful to treat both partners to make sure that we are achieving the optimum environment for conception to take place.
However, it is important to note that reflexology is not a magic cure-all. It cannot guarantee a pregnancy, unblock fallopian tubes, treat chlamydia or cure endometrioses. It can however create a healthier environment for a possible pregnancy to occur by encouraging the body to work more efficiently.
A typical course of treatment would involve around six to eight sessions.
Assisted Reproduction Treatment
Couples about to embark on IVF, ICSI, GIFT or any other course of Assisted Reproduction Treatment will undoubtedly be experiencing a whole gamut of emotions in the lead up to beginning treatment.
Regular reflexology treatments at this stage can help keep you calm and positive about the forthcoming treatment and will also, importantly, ensure that your body is in optimum health, thus giving your treatment the very best chance of success.
